I'm interested in knowing how other school administrators feel about school dress codes/standards- for administrators and teachers:
Here is some food for thought-
- How is professional dress enforced in your school and district?
- Do you think administrators should have a higher standard for professional dress than teachers?
- Do you believe it is more acceptable for elementary school teachers to dress comfortably than secondary teachers?
- How do you generally dress at work?
Let me know what you think!

I think that administrators should be role models for teachers. It's important for them to have a certain sense of presence so that they can easily be distinguished from the teachers by parents and visitors.
Hi Jennifer,
I am enjoying reading your blog. As a fellow principal here in Tennessee, I feel that professional dress for teachers is often overlooked by administrators. We focus so much of our attention on student dress code that we miss seeing the laid back fashion of so many of our teachers.
Business casual is the norm as the days of the suit and tie are gone, however, I feel that teachers should wear professional attire that demonstrates authority and respect for their position, no matter what grade level. It should set a tone of admiration from the students, not a tone from the teacher that states "look at me, I am wearing what you wear" that we see so many times with teachers, especially newer teachers.

This is a big issue in my district. There is no real dress code. I have too many conversation with parents complaining about a teacher's attire. At the elelemnary level there are some teachers that take it too far. For example, sweat pants should never be considered appropriate unless participating physical activity. To answer your questions. Administrators do have high standards than teachers for dress. We represent authority. The meetings alone force us to a higher standard. I do believe that elementary teachers need more comfortable clothes. I wear a shirt and tie every day. I only wear a jacket occasionally. Nice post.
